Avete aperto un filmato su Youtube e non sentite nulla, anche se le immagini scorrono correttamente? Non vi preoccupate: non è la vostra scheda audio che fa i capricci, né le vostre casse che sono andate in fumo. È “solo” una tecnica del portale di video-sharing più famoso al mondo, volta a proteggere il copyright.

Il modo in cui agisce il bavaglio di youtube è semplice: attraverso un meccanismo di impronte digitali audio vengono identificati in maniera automatica tutti i video che contengono audio coperto da diritti e tali video vengono resi disponibili al pubblico senza audio e sono corredati di un messaggio che informa sulle ragioni della rimozione della traccia sonora.

Resta da capire se la scelta di mantenere la versione “audio-amputata” del video piuttosto che di rimuoverlo sia la più giusta nei confronti degli utenti o, piuttosto, sia dettata soprattutto dall’esigenza di pubblicizzare la lotta alle violazioni di copyright, nel tentativo di scoraggiare la pubblicazione di materiale protetto.
